Residency
PROFESSIONAL:
Dr.
Barthelow
excelled in
his
residency at
the
University
of Utah’s
prestigious
Moran Eye
Center. The
Moran is
known as one
of the top
ophthalmic
surgical
training
centers in
the in the
country. As
the Chief
Resident, he
performed
two to three
times more
surgical
procedures
than
average. Dr.
Barthelow
was also
active in
research and
received
numerous
awards
including
speaker of
the year for
his research
on
cataracts.
His
particular
interests
include the
latest
techniques
for cataract
management
(no-stitch
no-needle
surgery
under
topical
anesthesia),
laser
surgery,
glaucoma,
retinal
diseases
such macular
degeneration
and
diabetes,
and
oculoplastic
surgery and
trauma. He
has recently
finished
advanced
training in
the
diagnoses
and
management
of dry eye
syndrome and
will put
this
training
into
practice
with a new
formed dry
eye clinic.
Dr.
Barthelow
has a strong
commitment
for
volunteer
work and
helping the
underserved.
He staffed
free clinics
for the poor
and HIV
patients as
a medical
student,
provided eye
exams for
the mentally
disabled at
state mental
hospitals,
and
volunteered
at many
health fairs
and vision
screenings.
As a
resident, he
started a
free
ophthalmology
clinic for
the homeless
in Salt Lake
City. Most
recently, he
has returned
from a
medical
mission to
India, where
he
participated
in outreach
camps and
performed
free
surgeries.
